Meet the Veterinarians & Staff at St. Matthews Animal Clinic

Mike Schardein, DVM

As a veterinarian as well as managing partner, Dr. Schardein has been treating pets at St. Matthews Animal Clinic since 2000. He is deeply rooted in the community, having attended high school at St. Xavier and earned a B.A. and an M.S. in biology at the University of Louisville. He received his degree in veterinary medicine from Auburn University and returned to Louisville to start his career helping animals. He spends his free time with his wife, Becky; his two daughters, Katelynn and Malerie; and his pets. His dogs, Harri and Nixon, are regulars at the clinic, while his cat, Tom, holds down the fort at home. He also found time to run the Leukemia & Lymphoma Marathon in 2009, raising money for an important cause. It’s obvious to anyone who knows Dr. Schardein that he enjoys animals, people, and science. His career in veterinary medicine allows him to work with all three.

Robyn Cook, DVM

Dr. Cook couldn’t deny her love of animals even after graduating from Furman University with an accounting degree. After working as an accountant, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She came to St. Matthews Animal Clinic in 2002, after earning her veterinary degree at Auburn University. She shares her home with her husband, Brian, and their two daughters, Anna and Amelia. Rounding out the Cook household are Abby, a Redbone coonhound; two Himalayan cats, Beau and Callie; two domestic shorthair cats, Lydia and Linus; and her newest rescue, Rudy, a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix.

Tara McCoy, DVM

St. Matthews Animal Clinic welcomed Dr. McCoy to the clinic in 2010. She brings with her 13 years of experience as a veterinarian. Born and raised in southeastern Kentucky, Dr. McCoy attended Eastern Kentucky University before moving on to Auburn University to become a DVM. When she’s not at the clinic, she stays busy with her husband and three children. A lifelong animal lover, her household also includes five dogs, five cats, and a horse. She also donates her time to the Woodstock Foundation. Dr. McCoy loves being a vet because it allows her to help those who can’t speak for themselves.

Kim Hindman, DVM

Kim Hindman is a Louisville native who graduated from Eastern High School before moving to Lexington to attend the University of Kentucky. There she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering while also completing pre-vet courses. She completed her veterinary studies in 2009 at Auburn University. Prior to joining the staff at St. Matthews, she worked at a small animal hospital in Versailles, KY. An avid sports fan, she loves all sports, especially football. When she’s not golfing, her favorite activities include hiking, kayaking, and spending time with friends and family. Her two domestic shorthaired cats, Peyton and Marvin, are also excited to be a part of the St. Matthews team.
