St. Matthews Animal Clinic is a special place—with lots of special people, including our staff of five experienced veterinarians who are passionate about pet care! The clinic was founded by Dr. Bruce Catlett, a man who was very dear to his clients because of his willingness to help everyone who came to the clinic. He was known for his big heart and his passion. Although Dr. Catlett passed away in 2001, he is still an inspiration and a reminder of the clinic’s long-term commitment to the community and to the region’s animals.
Dr. Mike Schardein bought the clinic in 2002. Since then, the facility has been extensively updated with ultrasound equipment, laser therapeutics, and advanced post-surgical facilities. We still focus on providing the kind of caring service that Dr. Catlett modeled. We want to stay in touch and know how our patients are doing, and we try to accommodate emergency situations through our later hours.
Of course, we also boast a very wide range of service offerings, including internal medicine, senior pet care, preventive care, vaccinations, general veterinary surgery, orthopedic surgery, laser surgery, therapeutic laser treatment, pet dentistry, radiology, pet pharmacy, ultrasound imaging, laboratory, nutritional counseling, hospitalization, pet boarding and medical boarding, pet grooming, and pet day care.
St. Matthews Animal Clinic is active in the St. Matthews and greater Louisville community through involvement in a number of animal welfare events and charities. Our practice works closely with The Animal Care Society, Shamrock Pet Foundation, as well as the Woodstock Animal Foundation to offer charitably discounted medical services from our doctors for rescued dogs and cats throughout the year. Our doctors and staff have been involved in many local events, including, No Kill Louisville’s Million Mutt March, The Kentucky Humane Society’s Waggin’ Trail Walk, Kentucky Country Day School’s Career Day, Graeter’s Ice Cream Dog Days of Summer, Greathouse Shryock Traditional Elementary School’s Career Day, and the JCC Doggie Dip.
We are also proud sponsors of several events, including, University of Louisville’s Responsible Pet Ownership Fair, The Animal Care Society’s Bark in the Park, Kentucky Humane Society’s Tuxes & Tails Benefit Auction & Gala, The Kentuckiana Cat Club Annual Show, and The Louisville AIDS Walk & Pet Walk.
When we can’t get involved, we donate to local and national charities. The doctors and staff at St. Matthews Animal Clinic are also very passionate about causes that do not necessarily involve pets. We charitably support Kosair Charities, St. Matthews Area Ministries, The American Veterans, The Cabbage Patch Settlement House, The Bluegrass Center for Autism, The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana, The Special Olympics of Kentucky, Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana, Louisville Professional Firefighters, The American Legion, Chenoweth Elementary School, Saint Xavier High School, and Holy Trinity School. We strongly believe that supporting the missions of other local organizations is how we contribute to Louisville being such a wonderful place to live and work.
